T he challenge here was not only to convert the building to the needs of modern profesional design studios but to radically improve an extremely dated face-brick and steel-windowed building of the early 1950s. We plastered the face brickwork in a more timeless way, refenetrated all facades, introduced a strongly defined podium and celebrated the building’s corner position by cutting the structure back and inserting a four-floor cylindrical glazed bay to accommodate the conference rooms. Interior detailing was Egyptian-inspired. Unfortunately the planned fifth floor and sixth floor mansard were never added, nor the stylised metal cavetto cornice.that would have completed the facade design.
