Count Natale A D Labia
O ur involvement with the maintenance and renovation of this, one of South Africa’s most stately homes, dates from 1979, before the owner Count Luccio Labia decided to once again take up residence in his ancestral home in 1980 to raise his new family.
After initially addressing severe waterproofing and other maintenance issues, we embarked on a full restoration of the magnificent interiors of the main house, and converted the service wing to accommodate all the conveniences of a modern home. The historic tower was reinstated, a dreadful toilet block was demolished and a grand terrace for outside entertainment replaced what was formerly a service carpark.
In 2004 we completed the historic composition by rebuilding the Conservatory in contemporary detailing that reflected its 1907 predecessor, which had collapsed during the 1950s.
Other projects included the restoration of the historic ballroom below the conservatory, the addition of garages to accommodate the Count’s antique car collection, extensions to the kitchen in period style, creation of a pool disguised as a lilypond, a timber folly of a pool change room, birdcage, greenhouse, garden shed, the restoration of the Carrara marble family Mausoleum, and the creation of a little Reliquary Chapel of San Antonio Deodato.
This project is never-ending.
